Matt Vaeena

Matt Vaeena brings a unique blend of elite collegiate experience, proven program-building leadership, and deep commitment to student-athlete development to the Decatur High School football program. Discipline, accountability, and toughness are hallmarks of his coaching philosophy.
Coach Vaeena first joined the Decatur coaching staff in 2017 as a volunteer coach before being elevated to head coach in 2018. Taking over a program that had struggled for consistency and postseason relevance for decades, he immediately began laying the foundation of the Decatur Football culture - family. For Vaeena, it has always been bigger than football. He is deeply ingrained in the community, and his dedication shows through the bond and brotherhood the Decatur players have developed.
What followed after that foundation was set became one of the most significant turnarounds in recent South Sound football history. Under Coach Vaeena’s leadership, Decatur transformed from a perpetually rebuilding program into one of the premier rising programs in the North Puget Sound League. His early teams established the competitive standard and culture that fueled the Gators’ emergence as a legitimate playoff contender. By 2019, Decatur was already competing for a postseason berth despite fielding one of the smallest rosters in 4A football. Over the following seasons, the program steadily climbed into contention and eventually achieved historic milestones, including the school’s first undefeated league championship season and appearance in the WIAA State Playoffs.
Coach Vaeena’s impact on the program and the league was formally recognized when he was named the 3A NPSL Coach of the Year following Decatur’s historic 2024 season. That same season also saw the Gators earn multiple major league honors, including both Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards. His leadership helped guide Decatur to an undefeated start and statewide recognition as one of Washington’s breakout programs.
Beyond wins and accolades, Coach Vaeena is widely respected for the relationships he builds with players and families. Known for his authenticity and unwavering investment in young people, he has consistently emphasized mentorship, character development, and long-term growth over personal recognition. In interviews reflecting on his tenure, Coach Vaeena repeatedly credited his assistant coaches, players, and community for the program’s success while emphasizing his pride in helping establish a standard where competing for championships and playoff appearances became the expectation at Decatur.
After 8 years, Coach Vaeena announced he would be stepping down from the head coach role. In his announcement, he expressed that he was confident his successor, Coach Cook would continue the momentum the Gators have gained under his leadership.
Vaeena's influence on Decatur football extends far beyond wins and losses. His leadership helped reshape the identity of the program, establish a lasting culture of accountability and competitiveness, and build a foundation that continues to position the Gators for sustained success in the years ahead.
